Ethanol, 2,2¢,2¢¢-nitrilotris-.
2,2¢,2¢¢-Nitrilotriethanol [102-71-6].
» Trolamine is a mixture of alkanolamines consisting largely of triethanolamine [N(C2H4OH)3] containing some diethanolamine [NH(C2H4OH)2] and monoethanolamine [NH2(C2H4OH)]. It contains not less than 99.0 percent and not more than 107.4 percent of alkanolamines, calculated on the anhydrous basis as N(C2H4OH)3.
Packaging and storage— Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers.
Identification—
B: To 1 mL add 0.1 mL of cupric sulfate TS: a deep blue color is produced. Add 5 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide, and concentrate to one-third of the original volume by boiling: the blue color remains.
C: To 1 mL add 0.3 mL of cobaltous chloride TS: a carmine red color is produced.
Specific gravity 841: between 1.120 and 1.128.
Refractive index 831: between 1.481 and 1.486 at 20.
Water, Method I 921: not more than 0.5%, a mixture of 5.0 mL of glacial acetic acid and 20 mL of methanol being used as the solvent.
Residue on ignition 281: not more than 0.05%.

Assay— Transfer about 2 g of Trolamine, accurately weighed, to a 300-mL conical flask. Add 75 mL of water and 2 drops of methyl red TS, and titrate with 1 N hydrochloric acid VS: each mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid is equivalent to 149.2 mg of triethanolamine, expressed as N(C2H4OH)3.
